Ok I’ve been a little lax on the posts, but hey, to make up for it, here are some music reviews!
I’ve been going through my CDs trying to get a hold on all the music I haven’t been listening to in a million years, so these below represent some fine selections from the LRHB Musical Archives:
Team Dresch - Personal Best
This was one of my favorite albums back in high school. Yeah, ok, so maybe they were riot grrls and maybe they would probably spit on me before saying hey, thanks for listening, but that’s ok! They were rockin’ and angry, and they moved me with their tales of heartbreak and playfighting. Definitely one of the most influencial riot grrl albums of all time. Recommended tracks: The whole album, but if I had to pick just two, Fake Fight and Fagetarian & Dyke.
Dance Hall Crashers - The Old Record
Oh ska… I know you’re not dead. You’re out there, somewhere, sleeping, waiting for the 4th wave to come along, I just know it. Another high school favorite, Dance Hall Crasher was one of the bands that inspired Save Ferris to rip them off and go mainstream jocking their style big time. Ok, maybe that’s unfair. But it’s true. This one was my first exposure to DHC, and their subsequent albums were pretty good too. Ska with girl vocals was a nice change from… well, boy vocals, since back then, ska bands were a dime a dozen. In Anaheim anyway. Notable favorites: Pickup Lines and DHC (probably my favorite off of this album)
Echobelly - On
Britpop! Oh Britpop! Whatever happened to you? Oh, that’s right, you became bubblegum pop or cuddlecore or kandypop or something like that and it all went terribly awry. Pulp, Lush, Echobelly… you are all sorely missed. I think this might have been the first britpop band I really liked, and amazingly, they’re still together, as adorable as ever. Their site has some mp3s for download from an upcoming album, pictures, and video of cuteness incarnate Sonya and Glenn talking about, stuff: http://www.echobelly.com
Laurie Anderson - Big Science
Leading lady pioneer of the crazy and wonderful Laurie Anderson opened my ears up to the world of musical-esque spoken-word performace-art music. This was the first album I heard and opened the gate to her other many fantastic works. Another favorite of mine who took her cue from Laurie Anderson is Miranda July, who… is wonderfully insane… seeming. Miranda July incidentally is also a filmmaker with a new work currently screening across the US. Check her site for details and check them both out, if you dare. Favorite track: O, Superman.
Ok I think that’s enough for now. More to come, once I sort through the mounds of CDs and find more gems from the collection!
