Bollywood for Beginners!

For the uninitiated, I’m sure looking through the wealth of titles available today is a daunting task indeed. As a service to the people, allow me to recommend three good places to start:

Savers a.k.a. Value Village a.k.a. Village du Valeurs

Picture 2

Hands down one of the greatest things about living in Olympia was the existence of the greatest thrift store I’ve ever seen, Value Village. This chain operates throughout the Pacific Northwest (and apparently Canada!) and is without question the greatest thrift store experience I ever had.

Praise (The One Eyed) Jesus!

Long awaited BBC documentary on the spooky South “Searching For The Wrong-Eyed Jesus” is finally coming to DVD in early 2006.

The second I heard of this movie, making the rounds at various film festivals that had nothing to do with my part of the world, I wanted to see it. Jim White, a man with an amazing set of both chops and musical talents, sets forth on a road trip into the American South collecting “stories and testimonies” that paint an honest human history of the area that produces so very, very much weird stuff.

U.S. Seeking Source of Underwear-Clad Saddam Photos
From Times Staff Writer

The Adventures of Pete & Pete: Pure Genius

I had such a hard time finding this DVD! Yes, it came out just Tuesday but no one, and I mean no one, had it. I had tried all the usual suspects, but either they had only ordered one for the release day and it was nowhere to be seen, or they simply didn’t have it.

Hey, what was that font they used for…

Just last week a friend asked me what font I thought they used for The Godfather. Naturally, back in the day before they had digital type, there was a thing called a “letterer” or “title designer” whose job it was to make custom titles and logotypes for things like companies, movies, and candy.

However, that was a very long time ago, and many of those hand-made titles have been digitized and expanded into full alphabets using best guesses based on the existing samples.

And today while searching for something completely unrelated, I found this: http://www.typenow.net/themed.htm

Enjoy!
