딸기가 좋아 (The strawberry is good!)

Dalki

When I was little, I was visiting my friend’s house and his sister came to the door and asked, “Do you guys want some doggy juice?” Doggy juice?!? I didn’t want to offend anyone, so I played it real cool… my friend seemed pretty excited about it, so I decided to hang in there and see what would happen, you know? A little while later, she came in with two glasses full of milky goodness, and I drank it. Why, it didn’t taste anything at all like doggy, much to my surprise! Puzzled, the foreign devil as I was, I asked my friend coyly, “Why do you call it doggy juice?”

“Doggy juice????”, he replied.

“Yeah, you know… she came and asked us if we wanted doggy juice…”

And laughter ensued. After the entire family had stopped laughing and pointing and laughing some more, they explained to me that she indeed did not say DOGGY, but more like DAHLGEE, which, in Korean, means strawberry. So it was strawberry juice, and it was delicious.

That’s pretty much what I think of every time I hear the word strawberry, but when I happened upon DALKI, I couldn’t help but relive the whole thing.

As I don’t speak Korean, I’m not really sure what the Dalki website is all about. It’s cute though, and weird, and in my book that gives it two thumbs up. Dalki, who I’m going to guess is the person with the strawberry on its head, flies around with a good friend donning a watermelon. The interface is super slick and fun, even if I have no idea what’s going on. I know in today’s “Web 2.0″ world, people just love to hate flash websites, but the real reason behind that is that, well… flash websites for the most part suck. Few people pull them off well, so of course they suck, and of course people hate them.

If only we could all have a little dalki in our flash-authoring hearts, the web would be a much, much better place.
