Just a little bit of history repeating…

Past vs. Present

I guess with the internet, and its vast wealth of information, it’s a lot easier to dig up the past than it was before. Maybe it’s inspiration, maybe it’s just copying, but the sweetest looking design to come out of Microsoft’s competition to dream up innovative next-generation Windows-based PCs just so happens to look exactly like something Apple came up with a long time ago.

NY Times Transit Strike mini-site

The New York times turned around a mini-stie for the transit strike real quick, using photos and sound clips from those who had to figure out how to go about their daily routine minus the public transportation we all know and love.

The Apprentice 4: Randal, You’re Hired (and You’re A Shmuck?!)!

Randal Is A Shmuck??

The fourth season of The Apprentice has finally come to a close, with Donald Trump choosing superstar candidate Randal as his next Apprentice. Personally, I thought he should have chosen Rebecca, who seemed much more focused, and driven. Last week’s episode ended with a cliffhanger and in the preview, the announcer said something along the lines of, “… and The Donald has one more surprise…”, which made me immediately think he was going to hire both of them. It’s been such a fire-happy season, letting go of two, even four people, at once, that I figured hey what the heck, they’re both great, hire them both!

Eminem has an awesome website! How about that!

Eminem

I found a link to Eminem.com somewhere, with no explanation as to why it was called out, so I clicked and saw why. At first glance it looks to be a pretty simple site… a flash video plays through, taking us down Shady lane with the history of Marshall Mathers. I thought “Oh how nice”… and then I noticed the “Found Objects” menu on the right hand side. Aside from looking like a video game, it actually kind of acts like one, where you can mouse around and click on things to get additional content that I might add is very well put together.

Yahoo makes some moves!

I think it’ll be very interesting to see who can pull it off first: leverage the power of social network sites without pissing people off and making them hate you for being “The Man”. As with real life, any new movement online has an attitude of uniqueness, individuality, independence, and, as with real life, whenever someone tries to make money off of it, people shake their poking sticks. Nearly every free service online that has turned to fee-based has failed, so sites turn to advertisers to generate revenue. This is nothing new… that’s how we can enjoy things like network television, and broadcast radio. But unlike television and radio, the internet for the most part is still very dispersed and decentralized, which has it’s pros and cons for sure. It’ll be interesting to see where the visionaries of today lead the internet of tomorrow.

That being said, Yahoo recently acquired social bookmarking site del.icio.us, hot on the heels of their acquisition of popular social photography site Flickr. Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Popular sites, as with subcultures, that start out “underground” can survive by going mainstream, but at what cost? Though history can give us some ideas as to what will happen next to these very popular sites, only time shall tell how things will pan out. Read more on Yahoo makes some moves!…

Do you Douban?

Douban

Yet another new social networking site has sprung up, but Douban is a little different—this one focuses on music and books. Great for the biblio and audiophile, Douban allows you to catalog, rate, and tag books and music you’ve either read, listened to, are in the process of enjoying, or want to enjoy one day in the future.
