Yet another new social networking site has sprung up, but Douban is a little different—this one focuses on music and books. Great for the biblio and audiophile, Douban allows you to catalog, rate, and tag books and music you’ve either read, listened to, are in the process of enjoying, or want to enjoy one day in the future.
The English-language beta just launched, and from the looks of things, it’s already a popular site in China.
Go sign up and spend some time rating every book you’ve read and every album you’ve ever heard… it’ll be fun!

you have to manually insert music and books into it. Until there is a way to import from maybe a bar code reader, it will never take off
That’s a good point, maybe there would be some sort of app that reads from your itunes library, or lets you add stuff from amazon… perhaps a Firefox extension. Social bookmark sites like del.icio.us and digg work that way, so maybe Douban could benefit from something along those lines…
I guess the function adding stuff from Amazon will come soon, coz it already exists in chinese douban. The english version looks similar as the beginning of chinese version. I think Bo Yang (the douban’s founder) is gonna add services and functions to it based on chinese version.
