The Future, by Bill Gates

Microsoft Surface

Popular Mechanics has behind-the-scenes video of Microsoft’s new multi-touch computing device, “Surface”, which they claim will “change the world.” I don’t know about all that, but it looks like they’re taking it one step closer to the hands-on interface from the Minority Report.

A lot of multi-touch demo videos have surfaced in the last year or two, and it seems like Microsoft partnered up with the researchers behind the new type of interface. These aren’t going to be available for your home (yet), but are meant to be in public places. Informative kiosks and children’s museums take on a whole new meaning with this bad boy.

With everyone waiting for the release of the iPhone, Microsoft (and Palm, too) are smart to capitalize on everyone’s drool by releasing some new goodies. I don’t think they’ll steal the thunder of the iPhone, but at least they can body surf the early waves with some exciting technology.

Check out Surface here!

[UPDATE] Microsoft has posted a pretty awesome website for Surface here. I like the hands in the interface!
