The PSB Gallery of Thrift Store Art

Thrift Store Art

For anyone who’s ever been in a thrift store and seen a remarkable work of amateur art, the PSB Gallery of Thrift Store Art is definitely for you.

Self-confessed pack rat Paul collects the finest examples of thrift store art, or more fancily named “naive” art, and shares them with the world. What really sets this site apart for me is the anecdotal tales that accompany almost every piece. From portraits to abstracts, still lifes to Jesus, this collection presents an impressive range of pieces from a still-yet unappreciated genre.

FIREWALL: A tale of two fonts

Last week, a co-worker and I saw the trailer for Firewall in a theater, and immediately we noticed the use of Emigre’s font Citizen, which we’d used in a corporate identity redesign a few months prior. The next day, I was telling another co-worker about it, and he said, “No, it’s not Citizen… it’s another Emigre font, but it’s not Citizen.”

Farewell, PowerMac. Hello MacBook.

Well, Apple’s decided to usher in the new Intel era by doing away with the PowerBook and introducing the new MacBook Pro featuring the Dual Core Intel processor. This was Steve’s “One last thing…” and it pretty much blew my mind. Not too many people saw this one coming…

New Music… Sunday?

Ok I’ve been a little lax on the posts, but hey, to make up for it, here are some music reviews!

I’ve been going through my CDs trying to get a hold on all the music I haven’t been listening to in a million years, so these below represent some fine selections from the LRHB Musical Archives:

No really, they call it the Information Superhighway for a reason!

I was poking around Google Labs, and noticed they have a new feature called Google Scholar, which “enables you to search specifically for scholarly literature, including peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports from all broad areas of research”. Totally crazy.

So while I was testing that out, I noticed these little “Library Search” buttons next to some of the returns that use something called WorldCat to help you locate copies of the book at a library near you, be it public, or private.

WorldCat is pretty amazing, and accessible from Google. I’ve found two options:

1) Search for something and include the term “find in a library”. This will return any library matches at the top, but it seems a little sparse. Good when you know a specific title.

2) Do a site-specific search using “site:worldcatlibraries.org” and a term. For example, “propaganda site:worldcatlibraries.org” will return 4,540 results which can be physically located at libraries in real life. You can toss in any number of terms to help focus the search, like authors, dates, publishers, etc.

Holy crap. My dream of becoming a spooky library dweller is now twelve steps closer!
